Dining in V.G. — Hog Heaven
If you haven’t visited Virgin Gorda in a while you might not know that the oft-delayed North Sound Road was finally completed and paved. Yes it’s still a white knuckler with few guard rails and a very steep incline (you still need to watch out for the goats). But the breathtaking views and now the food are worth risking your health over. Hog Heaven opened up at the peak of the road. Enjoy views of Mountain Point, Anegada, the North Sound and beyond with an ice-cold Red Stripe at hand and a heaping plate
of freshly slaughtered pork (organically raised from the owner’s herd), fish, potato slaw, and pigeon peas and black beans on the side. This joint (no disrespect) opens at 9 AM and closes when “last man standing” leaves the bar, 7 days a week. Hog Heaven is a welcome addition to the island culinary scene with reasonable prices, freshly prepared food, friendly service, spectacular views, and ice-cold brewskis. It’s a 5 minute drive from Sunset Watch Villa and 20 minutes from the Valley.
Maybe some of those pesky goats will end up as fresh stew some Saturday night.
The Island with a Dangerous Past – by Dennis Centis
Here’s a story on why getting to Angeda is so treacherous. Of course you have to get to Virgin Gorda first !
For those of you that have never flown into Virgin Gorda…..
You must experience it first hand. It’s a “unique” approach” made more so if the goats are frolicking on the strip. But well worth it for a perfect Virgin Gorda vacation memory !
Now that flying to Virgin Gorda got easier, we needed an updated new map……………
Since you can now fly directly into Virgin Gorda again, and get to your favorite BVI vacation villa much more quickly, we had to update our interactive map. Check out the interactive features with all the information you’ll need to travel in the British Virgin Islands.
Flying to Virgin Gorda Just Got Easier !
In case you hadn’t heard, the airfield at Virgin Gorda finally was reopened! Air Sunshine flew its first customers directly into our island paradise March 11, 2012. However, don’t get too comfortable with this ultra-conveniant (and recently infrequent!) feature of BVI travel.
The UK sanctioning body responsible for air travel and safety of its overseas territories, Air Safety Support International (ASSI) granted only temporary approval. So if your making your travel plans now for a future stay at Sunset Watch Villa, Drake’s View, or with Sir Richard at Necker Island, I highly recommend you check frequently with Air Sunshine, Cape Air, or any of the charter services as to the status of your flight. Air Sunshine clearly states on their website they will fulfill their obligation to you via arranging a ferry from Beef Island if the Virgin Gorda air strip is closed. Having to spend an extra hour or two at Trellis Bay, in my humble opinion, is not much to complain about (have a cold beer at Jeremy’s Trellis Bay Cyber Cafe and soak in the vibe!).
As of this writing Air Sunshine resumed direct service from both San Juan an St Thomas. Rates as of April 12 were $270 round trip from Puerto Rico, and $250 round trip from St Thomas, with one way fares costing $145 from either location.

Why We Call it “Sunset Watch”
Winter Swells
This was shot this late November when the first of the winter swells were starting to roll in. Pretty cool huh?
About Sunset Watch
The purpose of this blog is to share our love for Virgin Gorda and the British Virgin Islands. It’s open to anyone with an interest in the island, its people, the local culture, and the natural beauty that permeates everything surrounding all of it. Share your pictures, stories, anecdotes, even recipes. But please, share!
Sunset Watch Villa is a unique property from which to enjoy and reflect upon “Nature’s Little Secret.” Perched upon the normally secluded Nail Bay Beach, this Virgin Gorda vacation villa offers solitude and convenience. Each unit offers commanding views of the Dogs, Guano, scuba Island, and Tortola in the distance. Take a few short steps from your bedroom onto a postcard worthy beach and snorkel the morning or afternoon away. With three kitchens equipped for the gourmet trapped within, you never have to leave the villa unless you absolutely want to. Of course with the world-famous Baths and Devil‘s Beach a mere 15 minute drive away you might want to.
In addition to the kitchens, propane BBQ grills, blenders, coffee makers, espresso machines, bread makers, etc., we’ve equipped each of the Sunset Watch Villas with an iPad2. Each iPad has been loaded with 1700 songs, over 20 award-winning movies, and a subscription to the New York Times. I recommend you set your coffee maker to brew automatically, then wake up to a fresh cup of your favorite java (we stock coffee grinders as well). Gather your fresh brew, your iPad and arrange your favorite chaise lounge just so on the pool deck. Soak in the events back home from the iPad (if you must) or stream perfect music for the moment to one of the Villa’s stereos, creating an “aha, this is why I’m here!” moment. Better yet, use the iPad to take a picture of yourself, your coffee, and the view and post it to your Facebook page. Your friends will hate you.
